About the 2023 Conference

NZPopCon 2023 was held in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland, on 29-30 August 2023, at the University of Auckland. The theme:

POPULATION FUTURES IN AN UNCERTAIN WORLD – The Changing Faces of Aotearoa New Zealand

Speakers

Keynote speakers included Productivity Commissioner Ganesh NanaAssociate Professor Collin Tukuitonga, Pacific Dean of Auckland University’s Medical School, Associate Professor Sarah-Jane Paine (Ngāi Tūhoe) Research Director of Growing Up in New Zealand, and Associate Professor Celia McMichael, human geography specialist in climate change impact on the Pacific.

The conference also featured two special panels:

  • A panel discussion on Indigenous Data Sovereignty featuring Kirikowhai Mikaere (Te Arawa – Tūhourangi, Ngāti Whakaue), Associate Professor Donna Cormack (Kai Tahu, Kāti Mamoe) and Sam Manuela, Pacific Data Sovereignty Committee member.
  • In memory of the late Emeritus Professor Ian Pool, CNZM FRSNZ, we brought together a panel including PANZ Life members and invited them to reflect on critical issues for population in Aotearoa.  Many thanks to Len Cook, Associate Professor Elana Curtis, Professor Emeritus Jacques Poot, Dr Susan St. John and Robert Didham for participating.
